WORDS OF WELCOME

Hello and welcome to all new and returning MHS choir members! We're looking at a terrific year in one of Wisconsin's biggest and best choral programs with over 300 talented singers in 7 great choirs. Our motto is "A Tradition of Excellence" and our slogan is "Good Times With Good People." These aren't just things we say but rather how we work together and what we're about. This is my 4th year in teaching and my 3rd year at Memorial. I'm very excited and feel blessed to be stepping up and working with such fantastic kids in a wonderful program. My classes this year include Men of Memorial, Concert Choir, Old Abe Show Choir, and Madrigals. I will also be assisting our new addition to the department, Traci Ohlmann, with her choirs. She comes to us from Northstar and is excited to be here at MHS this fall. She will be working primarily with Treble Choir, Mixed Choir, and Eagle Show Choir. Check out her bio elsewhere in this newsletter.

This will be an exciting and action-packed year for the choirs at Memorial. Highlights include:

  • Fifteen MHS Choir members in the Wisconsin All-State Choir in October (A state record for the 8th year running!)

  • Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols" at Songs of the Season

  • Tudor Dinner XXXX in December

  • 17th anniversary Winterfest competition

  • Morten Lauridsen's "Lux Aeterna" in February

  • Presentation of George and Ira Gershwin's "Crazy for You" in March

  • Pops in the Park in May

This year in addition to our men's a cappella group (YTBN) we've added a girl's a cappella group to the mix. Both groups were auditioned last spring and will be working during 2nd period lunch. Watch for them at Varsity Show and throughout the year!

The MHS Choirs wouldn't be what they are today without the work of our outstanding Booster Club. This group of people has provided everything from financial resources to chaperons and just plain adult help at all choir activities. I strongly encourage all parents to not only purchase a membership but to come to meetings on the first Monday of the month. These high school years will all too quickly exist only in memories and one way to be a part of your child's MHS experience is through the choir boosters.

The MHS Choirs have become "like family" for hundreds of singers and their parents over the years. I hope to see all of you at the picnic and wish you a terrific school year. I look forward to meeting all of you and experiencing great music together!
